MOPED

Licence Category AM

You must be sixteen years of age, have a Provisional Licence and a Compulsory Basic Training Certificate (CBT)
OR
Have a Full Car Licence and a CBT
OR
Have a Full Car Licence obtained before 1/2/2001

 

125cc MOTORCYCLE or SCOOTER with L Plates

Provisional Licence Category A1

You must be seventeen years of age, have a Provisional Licence and a CBT
OR
Have a Full Car Licence and a CBT 

125cc MOTORCYCLE or SCOOTER without L Plates

Full Licence Category A1

All of the above plus:

 
1. Theory Test 50 multiple choice questions on Highway Code and hazard awareness
2. Practical Module 1 Basic machine control test conducted at a Test Centre
3. Module 2 Road ride with examiner following in radio contact giving instructions on the manoeuvres required

MOTORCYCLE or SCOOTER up to 46bhp

Licence CategoryA2

You must be nineteen years of age. If you have held a full A1 licence for a minimum of 2 years the successful completion of Practical Modules 1 and 2 will gain you a full A2 licence. This is called Staged Access. Alternatively successful completion of a Theory Test and the Practical Modules 1 and 2 will also qualify you for a full A2 licence. This is called Direct Access. The Practical tests must be completed on a machine with a power output between 33 and 46bhp. 

MOTORCYCLE or SCOOTER (unrestricted)

Licence Category A

If you are 21 years of age and have held a full A2 licence for a minimum of 2 years successful Staged Access will gain you a full A licence. If you are 24 years of age Direct Access is available. The Module 1 and 2 test are taken on a machine with a power output in excess of 46bhp.

Notes:

 
Training Schools provide appropriate training to bring you to the required standard for the tests. They also hire bikes for you to practice on and for the test. The Training Schools also carry out Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

Automatics. Most Scooters are automatic. If a test is taken on an automatic the licence will only be valid for an automatic.
